Are Heavy-Duty Hybrids and Electrics Right for your Fleet?

In the past decade, hybrid and electric vehicle technologies in heavy-duty fleets have become more accessible with the support of government regulations, grants and incentive programs.  These policies, coupled with fuel price instability and increased pressure and motivation to mitigate climate change have resulted in several fleet operators, in both the private and public sectors, to run pilot projects that integrated these vehicles into their fleet portfolio.  Although their aim was universally to reduce their operating costs, fuel usage and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions – the success of deployment has varied considerably.

Heavy-duty trucks represent a small portion of total vehicle traffic but represent about 20% of GHG emissions from the transportation sector in both Canada and the United States.  And, converting even just one heavy-duty vehicle to hybrid or electric can have a profound impact on green fleet objectives.  As suggested by, “consumer hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight do a great deal to limit the emissions footprints of the people who drive them.  When you take gas-electric technologies and put them into heavy duty vehicles like earth movers, the resulting emissions savings can equal that of 14 Priuses over the course of a year.”

Although the potential for this technology to save energy and reduce emissions is compelling, real-world data reveals that the business case is often made or broken based on the vehicle’s application and duty cycle.
