Why sign up for Charge the North?

We’re on a mission to help Canadian utilities provide a better charging experience for EV owners like you. Real-world charging data is critical for utilities to make informed decisions. We’re asking 1,000 Canadian EV owners to help pave the way for world-class EV infrastructure by clipping in a FleetCarma C2 device until March 31, 2021.

Common questions

You are eligible for this program if you live in Canada and own or lease a plug-in electric vehicle – either a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or battery electric vehicle.

You’ll receive a C2 device and gain access to advanced EV stats from FleetCarma dashboard at no cost. We cover shipping as well.

We’ll review your application to confirm eligibility. If accepted, we will send you a FleetCarma C2 with instructions for installation and how to activate your C2.

The C2 was developed by FleetCarma to give electric vehicle drivers access to a wealth of information about their cars like driving efficiency, battery health, and more. It makes EV data access easy, comparable, and shareable. The C2 fits in the palm of your hand, and is installed into the on-board diagnostics port in your electric vehicle – this is called the OBD port. From there, the C2 gathers data directly from your vehicle’s internal systems, processes it, and makes it available to you through your FleetCarma dashboard.

Yes. For Teslas and other vehicles with alternative OBD setups, the C2 device is installed in a proprietary diagnostics connector using a supplied adapter cable.

With electric vehicle sales on the rise, utilities need to capture real-world charging data from their service area. Real-world charging data is necessary for utilities to make informed decisions about their infrastructure and ensure they are ready to provide EV owners a good charging experience. The C2 collects:

Charging Information — The amount of charging energy consumed is collected in order to provide you with charging behavior feedback.

Driving Information – Used to calculate energy efficiency in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) and watt-hours per mile (Wh/mile).

Location Information – GPS charging location coordinates will be used to determine where Canadian EV owners need charging stations and where they currently charge.

Information that can identify you personally will not be made public or given to organizations outside of FleetCarma and our participating partners (Alectra Utilities, BC Hydro, Oakville Hydro, Burlington Hydro, Waterloo North Hydro, Nova Scotia Power, Hydro-Québec, Bruce Power, Toronto Hydro, NB Power, University of Waterloo, and AddÉnergie Technologies Inc).

GPS information is collected, but not shared at the individual level. The data is collected and stored but no one outside of FleetCarma will see an individual’s location data. The GPS data will be aggregated for the purpose of showing charging hotspots.

Installation is simple and instructions will be mailed to you with your C2 device. You can also refer to our knowledge base for video instructions and troubleshooting tips. Please contact if you need further assistance.

Yes, by signing up for Charge the North and receiving your free FleetCarma C2 device, you are agreeing to clip in as soon as possible and remain clipped in until March 31, 2021.
