Preparing for a plug-in future

LES is preparing for a future with more electric vehicles, and with our new study, you can help us gain insight into customer charging behaviors. From when and where you charge to how much energy is consumed during charging sessions, you’ll help us ensure that our power system is ready for more EV drivers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the point of the study?

LES is partnering with FleetCarma to collect charging information for Electric Vehicles (EV) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) in the LES service territory. This information will help LES learn more about EV and PHEV impacts in our city and climate while playing a vital role in helping LES prepare for the future adoption of more electric vehicles.

How will the study work?

Participants will install a small device in their vehicle that automatically collects and transmits vehicle information via a cellular connection.

Am I eligible to participate?

Participants must be an LES customer who own or lease a plug-in hybrid electric or battery-electric vehicle that is typically charged within LES’ service territory.

Where does the hardware device plug in?

The device is very easy to install, simply plugging into your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics (OBD II) port or Tesla diagnostics connector. The OBD II port is typically located below the steering wheel and is the same port mechanics plug into for diagnostic checks.

How will the device know where I am charging?

GPS determines charging location. GPS information is only collected when charging, not while driving.

When will I get the device?

If you are selected to participate, the device will be mailed to you and you will be notified regarding your acceptance to the program.

Can I remove the device?

The device should remain plugged in for the duration of the study. However, it is fine if your auto shop temporarily removes the device for diagnostic testing. Just be sure it is plugged back in afterward.

What should I do if I have an issue with the device?

If the device is lost or damaged, or if you have any questions, contact LES at ev@les.com.

What is FleetCarma?

FleetCarma is a connected car platform that allows organizations and individuals to effectively monitor electric vehicles.

What is the study timeline?

Prospective participants can apply starting on Aug. 1, 2018. LES expects to begin collecting data Nov. 1, 2018, with the data collection period lasting two years.

What will I get for participating?

In addition to helping LES learn more about EV and PHEV charging habits, you’ll receive a $25 credit on your bill once data collection commences and then another $25 credit when you return the hardware device to LES at the end of the study. You’ll also have access to your charging and driving data on the FleetCarma online portal, all at no cost.

What information will LES collect?

Via the FleetCarma hardware device, LES will collect information about:
• Charging session duration, energy consumption and location.
• Trip duration, energy consumption and distance traveled.

Will my private information be protected?

All data will be used only by LES and FleetCarma for the purposes of running this program. Any personally identifiable information will not be made public or shared with any other organizations, and all data will be anonymized by FleetCarma before being turned over to LES. Read the FleetCarma Privacy Policy to learn more.

How many customers will be participating?

Although the actual number of participants is flexible, LES is ideally targeting 50 customers.

When should I install the device?

The device must be installed within 10 days after delivery.

How do I tell if the device is working properly?

FleetCarma will notify you via email if the device is not communicating. In addition, there are also diagnostic lights on the device that you can view.
