Setup is quick and easy. Your free connected car device – the Geotab GO9 – plugs right into your EV’s onboard diagnostic (OBD) port or Tesla diagnostic connector to unlock powerful information about your EV usage.

In addition to the charging information collected for WED, participants get and can download the following stats about their EV’s from FleetCarma:

Trip data
View your electric miles driven, carbon footprint, and battery state of charge by trip.

Ambient temperature
Gauge outside temperature during a trip or charge event.

Charging by level
See the break down of charging from different charger levels.

Auxiliary loads
Find out how much energy you’re using on other systems such as heating, radio, and USB charging.

Understand your battery’s degradation of storage and power capacity over time.

Common questions

Participants will install a small device in their vehicle that automatically collects and transmits vehicle information via a cellular connection. Data collected are shared with participants in a personalized portal and will be used by FleetCarma and WED to understand EV charging.

You are eligible if you own or lease a plug-in electric vehicle – either a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or battery electric vehicle, and you are a WED customer that typically charges your vehicle within the WED service territory.

A conventional hybrid operates only on gasoline. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can be connected to an external electric source to charge its battery. If your vehicle can be plugged in, you may be eligible to join.

The study currently does not offer incentives to participants. However, the collected data could lead to future incentives or favorable utility rate design for EV charging. We will keep participants enrolled in the study informed should there be any updates!

Yes! You can register up to 2 vehicles in the program, simply indicate the number of vehicles in your application.

The Geotab GO9 is a connected car device that is installed into the on-board diagnostics (OBD-II) port in your electric vehicle. It gathers data directly from your vehicle’s internal systems, processes it and transmits it to FleetCarma’s cloud-based servers where it becomes available to you via a web portal.

The connected car device is very easy to install, simply plugging into your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics (OBD II) port or Tesla diagnostics connector. The OBD II port is typically located below the steering wheel and is the same port mechanics plug into for diagnostic checks.

No problem! Send us an email at smartcharge@fleetcarma.com and we can send you a free Y-cable so that you can have both devices connected.

The device should remain plugged in for the duration of the study. However, it is fine if your auto shop temporarily removes the device for diagnostic testing. Just be sure it is plugged back in afterward.

FleetCarma is a connected car EV platform that allows authorized organizations and individuals to gather useful data insights from electric vehicles.

Prospective participants can apply starting on June 1st, 2021, with the data collection period lasting two years.

Via the Geotab GO9 connected car device, WED will collect information about:

  • Charging session time
  • Energy consumption
  • Charging location (GPS coordinates will only be used to determine if charging is done within WED’s service territory. No GPS information is collected when you are driving.)

Via the Geotab GO9 connected car device, FleetCarma will collect information about:

  • Trip duration
  • Energy consumption
  • Distance travelled
  • Battery health
  • Driving efficiency (i.e., miles per gallon equivalent)
  • Ambient temperature when driving and charging
  • Some personal information submitted during your application, such as name, email, vehicle type and home address.

We hope 25 WED customers who own or lease EVs and live in Wallingford or Northford will volunteer to participate in this program. We may increase this number if more data is necessary.

If you move out of state, sell your EV or simply wish to no longer participate in the program, please notify FleetCarma Support by email to end your participation in the program and for instructions on how to return your connected car device if you have not yet activated it.
